Let love be without hypocrisy--The world is full of effusive expressions of affection,--and so, we fear, are many professing Christians--without real love in the heart: “Talking cream and living skim milk,” as Mr. Moody phrased it. “Let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth” (1 John 3:18). Abhor that which is evil--This is impossible to the unregenerate, and only intermittently possible for the carnal Christian; but to one who has obeyed the first two verses of this chapter and surrendered to God, it is a holy instinct! “Ye that love Jehovah, hate evil” (Psalm 97:10). To be a good Christian, a man must be a good hater! Cleave to that which is good--Here is not only the negative, the abhorrence of evil; but the positive, the discerning and holding fast that which is good. As Paul says in Php 4:8 : “Brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, [in a person] take account of these things.” Trust the anointing which you have received (1 John 2:20; 1 John 2:27) for discernment; and trust the study of the Word of God, to teach you what is really good."

The Ways of Grace

    " It is a serious thing, while full of comfort and warning to our souls as well, that there is nothing that so condemns sin as grace.  The law condemns it, no doubt, but the law, in itself, never judges the nature. It condemns acts. If applied by the Spirit of God, it leads one to gather what the tree must be from the fruit. It infers what the nature is, but it does not directly, and immediately, and entirely deal with it. Grace does:  "what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son (that is grace) in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin (as a sacrifice for it), condemned sin in the flesh."  God condemned the nature, root and branch; executed His sentence upon all that man is in his best estate. No disguises could stand now; no excuses: all was brought into the full light of God Himself, and all condemned. It is the same thing from first to last. The Bible Is As a Sword

"The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God." Ephesians 6:17  " The Word of God . . . sharper than any two-edged sword." Hebrews 4 :12  "The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon." Judges 7:18  "The sword . . . There is none like that: give it me." 1 Samuel 21:9  "My sword shall be bathed in heaven." Isaiah 34:5  In this militant metaphor we have the promise of conquest, victory, and dominion. The Bible as our sword is the weapon we use as soldiers against spiritual foes. It was thus that Jesus used the Scriptures in His contest with Satan in the wilderness temptation. In three different ways he assailed Jesus, but all He did was to give the enemy three thrusts of the sword. The three, " It is written, " were sufficient to defeat Satan ( Matthew 4: 4, 7, 10).
