At Calvary

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died
  On Calvary.
 
    Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty,
    At Calvary.

By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
  To Calvary.

Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus everything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing
  Of Calvary.

Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
  At Calvary!

Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power; Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour, turn not from His griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray.  See Him at the judgment hall,  beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned;  O the wormwood and the gall!  O the pangs His soul sustained!  Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;  learn of Christ to bear the cross.  Calvary’s mournful mountain climb;  there, adoring at His feet, mark that miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete. “It is finished!” hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die.  Early hasten to the tomb where they laid His breathless clay;  all is solitude and gloom; who has taken Him away?
